My Life as an Employee
I was fired at the beginning of this year. It was a blessing.
I logged on to work every day, but I had no enthusiasm for the job I was doing or the company I was working for.
My manager was manipulative and fostered a stressful work environment.
The daily criticism I received was messing with my self-esteem more than I realized.
My Epiphany
After leaving, I quickly began looking for a job. However, I knew in my heart that I didn’t want the jobs I was applying for. I didn't want to be a job seeker. I wanted to be a job creator.
There was no "dream job," in my mind. I needed to create my own dream job.
My Life as a Creator
Since starting, I’m the happiest I've been in my career. I have more energy and motivation than ever.
I didn't know a job could affect me so negatively. My wife actually told me I "got my sparkle back."
Here are the reasons why becoming a creator has been a great step in my life and why it might be right for you.
1. Authenticity
I felt like I was living a lie for too long. Pretending that I wanted to work for a company during the interview process felt phony. I knew I had more talents and interests than the limited skills I'd be using at a job.
2. Job Satisfaction
Friends have warned that starting my own business would mean longer days. They're right. The difference is I find this work fulfilling.
3. Creative Expression
Sharing my skills with an audience reignited my interest in subjects I was ready to walk away from. I rediscovered what I loved about them.
4. Flexible Schedule
I'm in charge of my own productivity. I can go to the gym in the middle of the day or shift my hours to start later. No more rushing home from lunch for a video conference.
5. Income Potential
Even if you're in a high paying career, salaries have a ceiling. A salary wasn't going to afford me the life I see for myself. With my own business, the sky is the limit.
6. Personal Connections
There is an entire planet of people who share your interests. So many of them have fascinating stories to share with you, once you're willing to share yours.
7. Lifelong Learning
I’ve learned more in the last few months than I have in the last few years - writing, video production, web development, marketing, and communication. Content creation requires a variety of skills and talents. There's always something new to learn.
8. Impact
I'm just getting started and already I've witnessed the impact I'm having. Friends have acknowledged my effort and opened up about their desires to publish content. It's nice to think that I'm inspiring others.
9. Career Opportunities
Many of the creators I follow have shared stories about unexpected opportunities. I'm looking forward to this in my journey. I have a lot to offer and I'm excited for all of the talented people I'll be working with in the near future.
Conclusion
If you're unhappy and underappreciated, start writing. There's never been a better time to find your voice.
It can be as simple as a post on X/Twitter. Small wins will build momentum.
Before you know it, you'll be on your way to the life and career of your dreams.
You owe it to yourself.
